The Research and Thinking Behind CP4CD

CP4CD is grounded in doctoral research and active practitioner thinking. The dissertation that anchors the practice was published in 2024 at Pepperdine University; the framework it proposed is the operational architecture for everything CP4CD delivers. The white papers, articles, podcast appearances, and conference talks below extend that work into the specific domains the practice serves. Read what's here. The thinking is the practice.

Doctoral Research

Putting the “Proof” in the Pudding: Ingredients to Consider in Executing an Effective and Sustainable Diversity Management Strategy Within ESG Conscious Organizations

Pepperdine University, Graduate School of Education and Psychology, 2024.

Critical-constructivist grounded theory qualitative study based on interviews with fifteen senior diversity and inclusion executives. The research diagnosed why organizational commitments to diversity strategy persistently fail to translate into substantive execution — inconsistent measurement, performative reporting, divergence between proclamation and practice — and proposed a measurement-and-execution framework for closing that gap. The framework is methodologically portable: it applies wherever organizational commitments depend on measurement to produce substantive practice, not only in diversity work. The framework is the operational architecture for everything CP4CD delivers.

White Papers

Substantive thinking on the problems CP4CD's three practices were built to address. Each paper is a free-standing piece — useful in its own right whether or not the reader becomes a CP4CD client. The papers extend the dissertation framework into specific applied domains.

PAPER 1  ·COMING SOONThe Measurement and Execution Gap

The Measurement and Execution Gap

Why organizational commitments fail and how to close the gap. The dissertation framework demonstrated why diversity strategies persistently fail to translate into substantive execution — inconsistent measurement, performative reporting, divergence between proclamation and practice. The same measurement-and-execution gap operates across every domain where organizational commitments depend on translation into substantive practice. This paper applies the framework to general organizational practice.

The Identity-Level Coaching Imperative

Why conventional executive coaching falls short for senior leaders in disruption — and what identity-level coaching architecture actually requires. When the disruption is structural (AI transformation, institutional displacement, dismantled professional identity), the coaching response cannot operate at the skill or behavior level. It has to do identity-level work. This paper articulates what that architecture requires: validated psychometric instruments calibrated to the leader's archetype, structured measurement at engagement close, and longitudinal session intelligence.

The Enterprise Expertise Gap

Why small and mid-size businesses have been structurally locked out of the McKinsey/IDEO-level frameworks Fortune 500 has always had — and what AI changes about implementation feasibility. Twenty years of structured problem-solving frameworks (lean management, structured problem-solving, customer centricity, dynamic work design) have been concentrated at enterprise scale. This paper argues why AI tooling shifts the implementation economics, and what an integrated consulting infrastructure for the growing SMB actually requires.

Equitable Access as Design Requirement

Building developmental infrastructure for populations whose access has been systematically constrained. Equitable access treated as a structural design choice rather than a programmatic feature — embedded in pricing tiers, scholarship structures, facilitator backgrounds, instrument selection, and program architecture. This paper articulates how equity-of-access functions as architectural commitment across all three CP4CD practices rather than as a layered-on inclusion initiative.

Cohort-Based Community as Structural Intervention

The U.S. Surgeon General declared loneliness a public health crisis in 2023. The dominant responses have been either clinical (therapy, mental health treatment) or recreational (apps, social events, community generally) — neither matches the structural nature of the problem. This paper articulates cohort-based community as a developmental response design: validated psychometric measurement (loneliness scales, social connectedness, social support), ongoing membership rather than time-bound enrollment, and alumni community as compounding infrastructure across multiple programs.

The Reluctant Founder: Displacement-Driven Entrepreneurship and the Developmental Infrastructure Gap

Federal workforce cuts, DEI infrastructure dismantlement, corporate restructuring, and AI-driven role obsolescence are producing a population that must think entrepreneurially without having chosen entrepreneurship deliberately. Business schools, founder accelerators, and venture capital networks were built for a different demographic. This paper names the ‘reluctant founder’ as a population with distinct developmental needs and articulates the two-stage developmental architecture (structured opportunity-identification work + embedded strategic-operational infrastructure) that this population actually requires.

The First-Time Women Entrepreneur: Integrating Trauma-Informed Financial Methodology Into Cohort-Based Developmental Architecture

First-time women entrepreneurs — particularly those entering entrepreneurship through displacement or life-stage transition — face a developmental challenge that is simultaneously about identity reorientation, strategic-operational learning, and financial-identity work. This paper articulates an integrated developmental response: Chantel Chapman's Trauma of Money (TOM) Method™ for financial-identity work, the KMSI-R for entry-point assessment, the dissertation’s measurement-and-execution framework for outcome architecture, and Pathfinder™ Discovery + Build & Operate for strategic-operational infrastructure.

Foundational Reading

AI Disruption and Identity

The works below have shaped how CP4CD’s three practices understand the problems they address. Some are foundational texts on the societal dimensions of these problems; one is a methodology lineage that informs how the work is delivered. Each is recommended because the thinking inside it is part of how CP4CD thinks about the work.

Co-Intelligence: Living and Working with AI

Ethan Mollick  ·  2024

Mollick (Wharton) provides the most accessible and practically useful framework for working alongside AI as a non-technical professional. The book treats AI as a usable collaborator rather than a replacement — the right starting point for any leader navigating AI in their own work.

Loneliness, Belonging, and Community

Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World

Vivek H. Murthy  ·  2020

Murthy’s book preceded his 2023 Surgeon General’s Advisory on loneliness as a public health crisis. The foundational text articulating how disconnection harms physical and mental health, and what community-based responses can actually do.

The Good Life: Lessons from the World's Longest Scientific Study of Happiness

Robert Waldinger and Marc Schulz  ·  2023

Distills more than eight decades of the Harvard Study of Adult Development into one clear finding: deep relationships are the strongest predictor of human wellbeing across the lifespan. Empirical anchor for why relational health is a structural developmental priority, not a soft skill.

Financial Identity and Money Behavior

The Trauma of Money: Mapping Compassionate Pathways to Healing Financial Trauma and Disempowering Financial Shame

Chantel Chapman  ·  Wiley, 2025

USA Today and Globe & Mail bestseller. Chapman’s Trauma of Money (TOM) Method™ — the framework she developed across years of research in trauma, addiction recovery, behavioral science, and economic systems — informs the Wealthy Woman™ program curriculum. Foundational reading for anyone navigating the intersection of money and identity.

Work, Identity, and Displacement

Man's Search for Meaning

Viktor Frankl  ·  1946 (numerous editions)

The canonical text on finding meaning under conditions of total displacement. Frankl, an Austrian psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor, articulates how purpose persists even when external circumstances strip away every other source of identity. Foundational to any framework that takes identity-level work seriously when work itself is taken.

The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma

Bessel van der Kolk  ·  2014

Van der Kolk’s general-reader synthesis of how trauma — including the trauma of displacement, work loss, and identity rupture — lives in the body and what recovery requires. Essential context for understanding why developmental work that ignores the somatic dimension consistently underperforms.

Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents

Isabel Wilkerson  ·  2020

Wilkerson (Pulitzer Prize winner) articulates the architecture of structural hierarchy in American life — the often-invisible system that shapes life outcomes independent of individual effort. Frames equity-as-architecture in language that helps leaders and organizations recognize structural barriers as design failures, not deficits in the people navigating them.

Operating Disciplines

There's Got to Be a Better Way: How to Deliver Results, Build People, and Find Meaning in Your Work

Don Kieffer and Nelson Repenning  ·  2024

MIT Sloan-developed Dynamic Work Design methodology — one of the structured problem-solving disciplines that informs CP4CD’s organizational diagnostics work. Kieffer and Repenning articulate how work is actually designed, where it consistently fails, and what closing the gap requires. Foundational reading for understanding the operational methodology under CP4CD’s consulting practice.
